Local

New builds, and the homes that came first

Rolleston gas work splits two ways: fitting out new houses, and replacing what went into the early ones.

Most of our Rolleston gas work is new installs. Cookers, fires and hot water going into new builds, usually as part of the original fit-out. On a new build that is straightforward work, because everything is being planned rather than worked around.

Larger installs and cylinder-fed systems

Depending on what is being run, a Rolleston install may be on bottled LPG or cylinder-fed. Cylinder-fed tends to suit the larger setups, where the demand is high enough that bottle swaps would become a nuisance.

The 15 year mark

Rolleston has been growing for long enough now that the early homes are reaching the age where boilers start needing replacement. Fifteen years is roughly the point where it becomes worth planning for rather than waiting for a failure.

If your home is around that age and the boiler is original, it is worth knowing where you stand before it decides for you, usually in winter.

Outdoor fires

Servicing outdoor gas fires is the other job that comes up regularly here. They take more weather than an indoor unit and are easy to forget about, so they tend to go longer between services than they should.

COMPLIANCE

Every job comes with a gas certificate

Gas work in New Zealand has to be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, and the certificate is your proof that it was. It matters when you sell, when you insure, and most of all when something goes wrong.

  • Carried out by a licensed gasfitter, not a handyman
  • Certificate issued on completion, for your records
  • Matters for insurance and when you come to sell
  • We will not sign off work we did not do

Proof

Recent gas work in Rolleston

Whitehead Plumbing & Gas work across Rolleston regularly, residential and commercial. Here is some of what we have been doing in the area lately.

  • Gas hob maintenance on Devine Drive

Maintenance on a gas hob at a Devine Drive property, including replacing a failed ignitor. A hob that will not light is not always a sign the appliance is finished, and a repair is often the sensible call.

  • Commercial gas maintenance on Hynds Drive

Ongoing gas maintenance at a commercial site on Hynds Drive. We work across both residential and commercial gas in Rolleston, and the same certification requirements apply either way.

Questions

Rolleston gas questions

How long does a gas boiler last?

Around 15 years is the point where replacement becomes worth planning for. Plenty run longer, but once a home passes that mark it is better to decide on your own terms than to have the boiler decide for you, usually in winter.

Do I need gas sorted before my new build is finished?

Earlier is easier. On a new build everything is being planned rather than worked around, so where the bottle sits and where the appliances go can be sorted on paper rather than retrofitted later.

What is a cylinder-fed system?

An alternative to bottled LPG that suits larger installs. Where demand is high enough that bottle swaps would become a nuisance, cylinder-fed is usually the more practical setup.

Should outdoor gas fires be serviced?

Yes, and they often are not. An outdoor fire takes considerably more weather than an indoor unit and is easy to forget about, so they tend to go longer between services than they should.

Can anyone install a gas hob?

No. All gas work needs a certificate showing a licensed gasfitter completed it. If someone offers to connect gas without one, that is a reason to stop and call someone else.

Do you charge extra to come out to Rolleston?

No. Rolleston is part of our regular service area and is charged at our standard rates. We only add travel for jobs genuinely outside the metro area, like Kaikoura or Akaroa.
