Local
Coastal conditions mean checking gas pipework more often
Salt and weather exposure are harder on pipework here than in inland suburbs, so the servicing interval matters.
We recommend servicing gas boilers every 12 months in New Brighton. That is a shorter interval than you would strictly need further inland, and the reason is exposure. Salt and weather work on pipework and connections continuously, so the condition of a system here changes faster than the same system would a few kilometres away from the coast.
What a service actually checks
It is not only about whether the appliance still fires. We look at the condition of the pipework and connections, because that is where the exposure shows up first. A boiler can be running perfectly well while the pipe feeding it is quietly deteriorating.
Old Pex gas pipe is no longer compliant
Some older New Brighton installations still have Pex gas pipe. It is no longer compliant, and where we find it we recommend replacing it with copper.
If you are not sure what your gas pipework is, a service is the point at which it would come up. It is worth knowing either way, because it is the sort of thing that only becomes urgent when you are selling, insuring, or having other work done.

What we do
Gas work we do in New Brighton
All of it carried out by a licensed gasfitter and certified on completion. The highlighted jobs are what we are called out for most often in New Brighton.
Annual boiler servicing
Every 12 months here. We check the condition of the pipework and connections, not just whether the unit is running.
Pex pipe replacement
Old Pex gas pipe is no longer compliant. Where we find it, we recommend replacing it with copper.
Gas hot water
Continuous flow and cylinder systems, installed and serviced.
Gas fires
Indoor and outdoor, new installs and servicing of existing units.
Hobs and cookers
Freestanding cookers and benchtop hobs, connected and certified.
Pigtail replacement
The hose from bottle to regulator. They harden and crack in the sun, and we always replace both at once.
COMPLIANCE
Every job comes with a gas certificate
Gas work in New Zealand has to be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, and the certificate is your proof that it was. It matters when you sell, when you insure, and most of all when something goes wrong.
- Carried out by a licensed gasfitter, not a handyman
- Certificate issued on completion, for your records
- Matters for insurance and when you come to sell
- We will not sign off work we did not do
Proof
Recent gas work in New Brighton
Whitehead Plumbing & Gas work across New Brighton regularly. Here is some of what we have been doing in the area lately.
-
New hot water system on Marine Parade
Installed a new gas hot water system at a Marine Parade property. This close to the water, we check the condition of the pipework and connections as part of the job rather than just fitting the unit.
-
Cooker burner replacement on Beresford Street
Replaced a couple of burners on a gas cooker on Beresford Street. Not every gas job is a full replacement, and a repair is often the sensible call where the appliance itself is sound.
Aaron leads our project work and knows the area well. We send whoever is closest and best suited on the day though, so you are not waiting on one person.

Questions
New Brighton gas questions
Is Pex gas pipe still allowed?
Old Pex gas pipe is no longer compliant. Some older New Brighton installations still have it, and where we find it we recommend replacing it with copper. A service is usually the point at which it comes up.
How often should a gas boiler be serviced in New Brighton?
Every 12 months. That is more often than you would strictly need inland, because salt and weather exposure here work on pipework and connections continuously, so condition changes faster.
What does a gas boiler service actually check?
More than whether the unit fires. We look at the condition of the pipework and connections too, because that is where coastal exposure shows up first. A boiler can run perfectly well while the pipe feeding it is deteriorating.
How do I know what gas pipework I have?
Most people do not, which is fair enough. It is the sort of thing a service brings up. It is worth knowing either way, because it tends to become urgent only when you are selling, insuring, or having other work done.
Can anyone install a gas hob?
No. All gas work needs a certificate showing a licensed gasfitter completed it. If someone offers to connect gas without one, that is a reason to stop and call someone else.
Do you charge extra to come out to New Brighton?
No. Gas work in New Brighton is charged at our standard rates, the same as anywhere else in Christchurch.
