Adding gas to an older Halswell home

Most of our Halswell gas work comes out of a renovation, and the bottle does not have to be an eyesore.

A lot of the gas work we do in Halswell starts with a renovation. An older home gets refreshed and a new gas fire or a freestanding cooker goes in as part of it. The gas is often the last thing anyone thinks about, which is a shame, because it is easier to plan for at the start than to retrofit around a finished kitchen.

Keeping the bottle out of sight

The objection we hear most is that nobody wants a large gas bottle sitting against the house in full view. That is fair enough, and it is easily solved. A bottle cage keeps it out of sight without losing access, so the supplier can still get to it and you do not have to look at it.

It is a small addition that makes a real difference to how the finished job looks, and it is worth raising before the bottle goes in rather than after.

Worth thinking about early

If you are planning a renovation and gas is part of it, the earlier we are involved the more options you have. Where the bottle sits, how it is screened, and where the appliance ends up are all easier to work out on a plan than on site.

What we do

Gas work we do in Halswell

All of it carried out by a licensed gasfitter and certified on completion. The highlighted jobs are what we are called out for most often in Halswell.

Common here

Gas fires

Indoor and outdoor. A new fire is one of the most common things we fit as part of an older Halswell home being refreshed.

Common here

Hobs and cookers

Freestanding cookers and benchtop hobs, connected and certified. Often part of a kitchen renovation.

Gas hot water

Continuous flow and cylinder systems, installed and serviced.

Bayonet fittings

For outdoor heaters, BBQs and outdoor kitchens. Plug in the appliance, unplug it, store it away.

Pigtail replacement

The hose from bottle to regulator. They harden and crack in the sun, and we always replace both at once.

Annual servicing

Fires, hobs and boilers, once a year.

COMPLIANCE

Every job comes with a gas certificate

Gas work in New Zealand has to be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, and the certificate is your proof that it was. It matters when you sell, when you insure, and most of all when something goes wrong.

  • Carried out by a licensed gasfitter, not a handyman
  • Certificate issued on completion, for your records
  • Matters for insurance and when you come to sell
  • We will not sign off work we did not do

Recent gas work in Halswell

Whitehead Plumbing & Gas work across Halswell regularly. Here is some of what we have been doing in the area lately.

  • Gas boiler replacement on Patterson Terrace

Replaced a gas boiler at a Patterson Terrace property. Boiler replacement is one of the more common gas jobs we do in Halswell, particularly in homes being refreshed.

  • Removing a gas line on Halswell Junction Road

Disconnected and removed the gas line to a cooker on Halswell Junction Road, where the owner was switching to electric. Removing gas safely is as much a licensed job as installing it.

Questions

Halswell gas questions

Can I hide the gas bottle?

Yes. A bottle cage is a simple way to keep a large bottle out of sight without losing access, so the supplier can still get to it for swaps. It is worth raising before the bottle goes in rather than after.

Can I put a gas fire in an older home?

Usually yes, and it is one of the more common things we fit in Halswell as part of a wider refresh. What is involved depends on the house and where you want the fire to sit, so it is worth looking at on site.

When should I involve a gasfitter in a renovation?

Earlier than most people do. Where the bottle sits, how it is screened and where the appliance ends up are all easier to sort out on a plan than once the kitchen is finished.

Can I run a freestanding gas cooker in Halswell?

Yes. It runs on bottled LPG like everything else here, and the bottle size depends on what else you are running. We connect and certify the cooker as part of the job.

Can anyone install a gas hob?

No. All gas work needs a certificate showing a licensed gasfitter completed it. If someone offers to connect gas without one, that is a reason to stop and call someone else.

Do you charge extra to come out to Halswell?

No. Gas work in Halswell is charged at our standard rates, the same as anywhere else in Christchurch.
