Drainlayer in Redcliffs, Christchurch

Whitehead Plumbing & Gas are registered drainlayers covering Redcliffs from our Waltham workshop, 14 minutes away. Redcliffs has four distinct housing eras sitting side by side, so what is buried under one property can be completely different to the house next door.

Signs you have a drainage problem in Redcliffs

Drainage faults rarely announce themselves. On a Redcliffs section they often show up outside before they show up inside.

  • Slow or backing-up gully trap Especially after heavy rain.
  • Rust on a sump, grating or cover Salt air is hard on anything metal here.
  • Gurgling when something drains A shower or toilet reacting to another fixture.
  • A blockage that keeps coming back Clears, then returns a few months later.

Also worth calling about: water pooling against the house, a smell around the gully trap, or mature trees within a few metres of the drain line. Call us on 03 379 0711 and we will CCTV the line before quoting anything.

Local

What the ground is like in Redcliffs

Redcliffs is the most varied suburb we work in, and drainage is where that variety actually shows up.

Most Christchurch suburbs were built in one or two waves. Redcliffs was built in four. There is a pocket of 1910s to 40s baches and bungalows, a run of 1950s to 70s coastal modernist homes, 1980s to 90s split-level infill on the steeper sites, and a lot of post-2011 architectural rebuilding. Four eras means four different approaches to drainage, often within a few hundred metres of each other.

That matters because it changes what we expect to find before we even arrive. An older bach may still have original clay. A split-level build from the 1990s has drainage that steps down the section the same way the house does. A rebuild sitting on a basalt base has modern PVC but a very different installation story underneath it.

Digging into basalt

The volcanic rock Redcliffs sits on makes for slow, hard digging. It is not the same job as working in sandy ground down the hill, and it is not quite the same as the clay at Mount Pleasant either. Having the right tools on site is what keeps a job from running away on you, and anyone quoting it as though the ground were ordinary has not looked at it properly.

Salt gets everything eventually

This close to the water, anything metal in a drainage system ages faster. Sumps, gratings, covers and fixings all take a beating from salt air. It is worth factoring that in rather than being surprised by it, and it is one of the reasons we specify properly rather than fitting the cheapest available part.

Redcliffs shares its hillside terrain with neighbouring Mount Pleasant, so the same principles apply on sloped sections: correct digging and proper backfill, usually AP20 and lime, to hold the pipework in place once the ground settles.

What is probably under your Redcliffs property

Four housing eras means four different answers. Here is what we usually find, and what it means for any work you are planning.

  • 1910s to 40s
Original earthenware or clay, in short lengths A lot of joins, and roots find every one of them.
  • 1950s to 70s
Clay, often with PVC patched in where repairs were done Mixed materials age differently, so faults cluster at the transitions.
  • 1980s to 90s
PVC, stepping down the section with the house Falls and junctions follow the split levels, so access placement matters.
  • Post-2011
Modern PVC on a basalt or volcanic rock base Sound pipe laid to current standards, with the fewest surprises.

Our process

How we find the problem before we dig

Digging into basalt is slow and expensive. We work out exactly what is wrong and where before anyone starts.

CCTV the line

We run a camera through the drain and see exactly what is there, which matters more in Redcliffs than most places because the pipe material depends entirely on when the house was built.

Water blast and confirm

Water blasting clears the immediate blockage. That tells us whether the pipe is sound with roots at the joins, or whether a section has actually failed.

Quote the real fix

Once we know what is down there we quote it properly, including what the ground conditions will realistically take to dig.

Recent drainage work in Redcliffs

Whitehead Plumbing & Gas work across Redcliffs regularly. Here is some of what we have been doing in the area lately.

  • New sewer and stormwater lines on Bayview Road

Installed new sewer and stormwater lines for a job on Bayview Road. On a Redcliffs section the digging is the slow part, so knowing what the ground will take before quoting matters.

  • Stormwater line repair on Celia Street

Repaired a stormwater line at a Celia Street property. We CCTV first so the repair is based on what has actually failed rather than where it is easiest to get to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Redcliffs drainage questions

How do I know what kind of drain pipe my Redcliffs house has?

It depends almost entirely on when it was built. An older bach may still have original clay, a 1990s split-level will have PVC, and a post-2011 rebuild will be modern PVC throughout. A CCTV inspection answers it in minutes without any digging.

Does the sea air affect drainage in Redcliffs?

It affects anything metal. Sumps, gratings, covers and fixings all age faster this close to the water than they would inland. The buried pipe itself is generally fine, but the parts you can see are worth keeping an eye on.

Why is digging more expensive in Redcliffs?

Redcliffs sits on basalt and volcanic rock, which is slow, hard going compared with sandy or clay ground. It is not a reason to avoid drainage work, but it is a reason to be wary of a quote that treats the ground as ordinary.

I am adding a second toilet. Can the existing drainage take it?

Usually yes, but it depends what is already there. Tying a new waste connection into older clay drainage is a different job to connecting into modern PVC, so we check what you have before quoting the work rather than after.

Do you charge extra for drainage call-outs in Redcliffs?

No. Drainage work in Redcliffs is charged at our standard rates, the same as anywhere else in Christchurch. We only add travel for jobs outside the metro area like Kaikoura or Akaroa.

Do you handle urgent blocked drains in Redcliffs?

We respond to priority repairs during business hours. Call us and we will dispatch the nearest qualified drainlayer and give you an estimated arrival time. If we cannot get there soon enough, we would rather recommend another trusted tradesperson than leave you waiting.
