Our Christchurch rates
Rather than leave you with a vague range, here is what we charge as at 2026, so you know what to expect before anyone turns up. All prices exclude GST.
- Plumber or drainlayer: $158 for the first hour, which includes the vehicle fee, then $110 per hour after that.
- Gasfitter: $165 for the first hour, including the vehicle fee, then $117 per hour, plus $40 for a Gas Safety and Compliance Certificate where one is required.
- Apprentice: $65 to $75 per hour.
- After-hours callout: $280 for the first-hour minimum, charged once per job, then $165 per hour.
- Public holidays: $650 for the first-hour minimum, charged once per job, then $220 per hour. The higher rate reflects the day-in-lieu costs employers carry under the Holidays Act.
A few things worth knowing. We charge a minimum of one hour per visit, then in 15-minute increments after that. Labour time includes travelling to and from the job and sourcing any parts. Work outside the immediate Christchurch City area may attract an additional travel charge.

In New Zealand, plumbing and gasfitting are not jobs anyone can legally do. Every plumber, gasfitter, and drainlayer must be both registered and hold a current annual practising licence from the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board, under the law that governs the trade.
Registration shows the person has the qualification. The licence, which is renewed every year, is what legally allows them to do the work, and it confirms they are up to date with standards, have completed the required training, and have passed a fit-and-proper-person check. Most plumbing work, and all gasfitting work, is restricted, meaning only a licensed person may carry it out.
This matters for two reasons. First, using an unlicensed person can void your insurance and create real safety and legal risk, particularly with gas. Second, the cost of staying licensed, trained, and insured is part of why a proper tradesperson’s rate is what it is.
