Gas hot water suits bigger households
If your cylinder runs out halfway through the morning, the problem is capacity rather than the cylinder.
Gas hot water is the most common request we get in Aranui, and it is usually the same story. A larger household, a standard cylinder, and hot water that runs out before everyone has had a shower.
Why a cylinder runs out
A standard cylinder holds a fixed amount and then needs time to reheat. That is fine for a smaller household. Add a few more people and the same cylinder empties faster than it can recover, which is why the last person in the morning gets a cold shower.
What gas changes
Gas hot water, particularly a continuous flow system, heats water as it passes through rather than storing it. There is no tank to empty, so the capacity question largely goes away. For a larger family that is usually the practical fix rather than simply fitting a bigger cylinder.
Pigtails need replacing eventually
The other job we are regularly called out for here is pigtail replacement. The pigtail is the flexible hose connecting the gas bottle to the regulator, and it hardens and cracks over time. We replace them in pairs, because the second one has had the same exposure and usually fails soon after the first.

Freestanding cookers and benchtop hobs, connected and certified.
Gas fires
Indoor and outdoor, new installs and servicing of existing units.
Bayonet fittings
For outdoor heaters, BBQs and outdoor kitchens. Plug in the appliance, unplug it, store it away.
Annual servicing
Fires, hobs and boilers, once a year.
COMPLIANCE
Every job comes with a gas certificate
Gas work in New Zealand has to be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, and the certificate is your proof that it was. It matters when you sell, when you insure, and most of all when something goes wrong.
- Carried out by a licensed gasfitter, not a handyman
- Certificate issued on completion, for your records
- Matters for insurance and when you come to sell
- We will not sign off work we did not do
Proof
Recent gas work in Aranui
Whitehead Plumbing & Gas work across Aranui regularly. Here is some of what we have been doing in the area lately.
-
No hot water on Breezes Road
Called out to a Breezes Road property with no hot water. Diagnosed the fault and fitted a Rheem 27 continuous flow unit, which gives the household hot water on demand rather than waiting on a cylinder to reheat.
-
Gas pipeline and boiler for a portable building builder
Installed the gas pipeline and gas boiler for a local builder manufacturing portable buildings. Commercial gasfitting work, certified on completion like every other gas job we do.
Aaron leads our project work and knows the area well. We send whoever is closest and best suited on the day though, so you are not waiting on one person.

Questions
Aranui gas questions
Why does my hot water run out with a big family?
A standard cylinder holds a fixed amount and then needs time to reheat. In a larger household it empties faster than it can recover, which is why the last person in the morning gets a cold shower.
Is gas hot water better for a larger household?
Usually, yes. A continuous flow gas system heats water as it passes through rather than storing it, so there is no tank to empty. For a bigger family that tends to solve the capacity problem outright rather than just delaying it.
Should I just get a bigger cylinder instead?
It is an option, but it has limits. A bigger cylinder still holds a fixed amount and still needs reheating time. If the household has outgrown the system rather than just having a busy morning, continuous flow is usually the more permanent answer.
Why do pigtails need replacing?
The pigtail is the flexible hose connecting the gas bottle to the regulator. They harden and crack over time. We always replace both at once, because the second one has had the same exposure and usually fails soon after.
Can anyone install a gas hob?
No. All gas work needs a certificate showing a licensed gasfitter completed it. If someone offers to connect gas without one, that is a reason to stop and call someone else.
Do you charge extra to come out to Aranui?
No. Gas work in Aranui is charged at our standard rates, the same as anywhere else in Christchurch.
