Gas on the hill in Mount Pleasant
Not every Mount Pleasant property can take a standard gas bottle, and it is worth knowing that before you plan anything.
Most Christchurch homes run on a 45kg loan bottle. It is the default setup, the supplier delivers it and swaps it, and you never really think about it. On a Mount Pleasant section that assumption does not always hold.
The 45kg problem
A 45kg bottle is a big thing. It needs somewhere level to stand, and it needs to be reachable by the person delivering it. On a steep or tight hill site, one or both of those is often missing. Sometimes there is nowhere suitable to put it at all. Sometimes there is, but getting a full bottle to that spot is the problem.
An 18kg is usually the answer
Where a 45kg will not work, an 18kg is the practical alternative. It is a smaller bottle you own rather than borrow, and you arrange refills yourself. It holds less, so it needs swapping more often, but it will fit and it can be carried to places a 45kg cannot go.
Placement is worth thinking about early
Most of what we do here starts as a conversation rather than a job. Someone wants gas, and the question is whether the site can take it and where the bottle would sit. That is worth working through before you commit to an appliance, not after it arrives.

Gas work we do in Mount Pleasant
All of it carried out by a licensed gasfitter and certified on completion. On a hill site we will work through bottle size and placement with you before anything else.

Continuous flow and cylinder systems. Worth checking the site can take the bottle size it needs before you commit.
Gas fires
Indoor and outdoor, new installs and servicing of existing units.
Hobs and cookers
Freestanding cookers and benchtop hobs, connected and certified.
Bayonet fittings
For outdoor heaters, BBQs and outdoor kitchens. Plug in the appliance, unplug it, store it away.

COMPLIANCE
Every job comes with a gas certificate
Gas work in New Zealand has to be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, and the certificate is your proof that it was. It matters when you sell, when you insure, and most of all when something goes wrong.
- Carried out by a licensed gasfitter, not a handyman
- Certificate issued on completion, for your records
- Matters for insurance and when you come to sell
- We will not sign off work we did not do
Proof
Recent gas work in Mount Pleasant
Whitehead Plumbing & Gas work across Mount Pleasant regularly. Here is some of what we have been doing in the area lately.
-
Gas fire replacement in Cannon Hill
Replaced a gas fire at a Cannon Hill property. On a hill section the fire is often the easy part, and the conversation starts with whether the site can take the bottle the appliance needs.
-
Gas fire servicing on Soleares Avenue
Serviced a gas fire on Soleares Avenue. Fires are worth looking at once a year, since an unserviced unit can show signs of incomplete combustion long before anyone notices a problem.
-
Gas fire servicing on Osmond Lane
Serviced a gas fire on Osmond Lane as part of our regular run through Mount Pleasant.
Aaron leads our project work and knows the area well. We send whoever is closest and best suited on the day though, so you are not waiting on one person.

Questions
Mount Pleasant gas questions
Can my Mount Pleasant property have gas?
Usually yes, but the hill adds a constraint. The question is whether there is somewhere level for a bottle to sit and whether a delivery can reach it. On a steep or tight site a standard 45kg bottle sometimes will not work, and an 18kg is the practical alternative.
What is the difference between a 45kg and an 18kg bottle?
A 45kg is usually a loan bottle from the supplier, delivered and swapped for you. An 18kg is smaller, you own it, and you arrange refills yourself. It holds less so it needs swapping more often, but it fits and reaches places a 45kg cannot.
Where does the gas bottle have to go?
Somewhere level, accessible and safe, which on a hill section is less obvious than it sounds. It is worth working that out before you choose an appliance rather than after it arrives, and we are happy to look at a site and talk it through.
Why do pigtails need replacing?
The pigtail is the flexible hose connecting the gas bottle to the regulator. They harden and crack in the sun. We always replace both at once, because the second one has had the same exposure and usually fails soon after.
Can anyone install a gas hob?
No. All gas work needs a certificate showing a licensed gasfitter completed it. If someone offers to connect gas without one, that is a reason to stop and call someone else.
Do you charge extra to come out to Mount Pleasant?
No. Gas work in Mount Pleasant is charged at our standard rates, the same as anywhere else in Christchurch. We only add travel for jobs outside the metro area like Kaikoura or Akaroa.
