Signs you have a drainage problem in Mount Pleasant

Drainage faults rarely announce themselves. On a hillside section they often show up above ground before they show up inside.

  • Water pooling against the house Especially after heavy rain.
  • Slow or backing-up gully trap Or wet ground in the same spot on the section.
  • Erosion or scouring on a slope Below the house, where run-off is going the wrong way.
  • A blockage that keeps coming back Clears, then returns a few months later.

Also worth calling about: gurgling when another fixture drains, a smell around the gully trap, or run-off crossing a path instead of being carried away. Call us on 03 379 0711 and we will CCTV the line before quoting anything.

What the ground is like in Mount Pleasant

Drainage on a hill is a different job to drainage on the flat, and Mount Pleasant is all hill.

Hillside drainlaying needs the right approach from the start, and getting it wrong is expensive to put right. On a sloped section the pipe has to stay exactly where it was laid, so the digging and the backfill matter as much as the pipe itself. We use AP20 and lime to hold pipework in place, which stops it shifting once the ground settles and water starts moving through it.

Rock and clay

Rock and clay conditions are common across Mount Pleasant, which makes the digging slower and the job harder than the same work would be on flat, sandy ground. It also means having the right tools on site is not optional. A job that takes a morning in Woolston can take considerably longer here, and anyone quoting it as though the two are the same has not looked at the ground.

Where the access points go

On a sloped section, where you put the access points decides how easy the drain is to maintain for the next twenty years. Place them badly on rocky ground and every future inspection or clear becomes a dig. We work that out before anything goes in, rather than putting the pipe where it is easiest and dealing with access later.

Underground

What is probably under your Mount Pleasant property

Drainage is the one part of a house nobody ever sees. Mount Pleasant is more consistent than most Christchurch suburbs, because almost all of it was built in the same forty year window.

  • 1980s build
Early PVC, laid into rock or clay Sound pipe, but backfill standards varied, so movement is worth checking.
  • 1990s to 2000s
Modern PVC throughout Generally reliable. Faults tend to be at junctions rather than along runs.
  • Post-2011
Modern PVC, laid to current standards Fewest surprises, though ground movement can still change the fall.
  • Any hill section
Surface channels, drains and sumps alongside the buried pipe Managing run-off matters as much as what is underground.

Our process

How we find the problem before we dig

Digging blind is expensive anywhere. On rock and clay it is more expensive again, so we work out exactly what is wrong and where before anyone starts.

CCTV the line

We run a camera through the drain and see exactly what is happening and where it sits. On a rocky section that saves a lot of unnecessary digging.

Water blast and confirm

Water blasting clears the immediate blockage. That tells us whether the pipe is sound or whether a section has failed or shifted.

Quote the real fix

Once we know what is down there we quote it properly, including the backfill the job needs to hold the pipework in place on a slope.

Recent drainage work in Mount Pleasant

Whitehead Plumbing & Gas work across Mount Pleasant regularly. Here is some of what we have been doing in the area lately.

  • New drainage system at Plains View

Installed new sewer, stormwater, sumps and channel drains for the Plains View project. On a hill section a full system like this is as much about managing surface run-off as it is about what goes underground.

  • Blocked drain on Major Hornbrook Road

Cleared a blocked drain at a property on Major Hornbrook Road. We CCTV the line first so you know whether it is a clear or something that needs replacing, rather than guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mount Pleasant drainage questions

Why does drainage cost more on a hillside section?

Two reasons. Rock and clay ground makes the digging slower than it would be on flat sandy ground, and a sloped section needs proper backfill, usually AP20 and lime, to hold the pipework in place. Both add time, and skipping either causes problems later.

What is AP20 and lime backfill, and why does it matter?

It is the material packed around the pipe once it is laid. On a slope it stops the pipe shifting as the ground settles and water moves through it. On flat ground you can get away with less. On a Mount Pleasant section you cannot.

Where should drain access points go on a sloped property?

Somewhere you can actually reach them. On rocky ground, a badly placed access point turns every future inspection into a dig. We work out placement before anything goes in rather than putting the pipe where it is easiest and dealing with access later.

Can you alter drainage on a Mount Pleasant section?

Yes, and it is one of the more common jobs we do here. Alterations on sloped sections need the fall worked out properly from the start, because water that is not directed away ends up somewhere you do not want it.

Do you charge extra for drainage call-outs in Mount Pleasant?

No. Drainage work in Mount Pleasant is charged at our standard rates, the same as anywhere else in Christchurch. We only add travel for jobs outside the metro area like Kaikoura or Akaroa.

Do you handle urgent blocked drains in Mount Pleasant?

We respond to priority repairs during business hours. Call us and we will dispatch the nearest qualified drainlayer and give you an estimated arrival time. If we cannot get there soon enough, we would rather recommend another trusted tradesperson than leave you waiting.
